About The Farm
Sweet Grass Farm is where Wendy raises the livestock for Meadow Raised
Meats. Sweet Grass Farm is a 60 acre grass farm in Upstate New York, about
45 minutes east of Syracuse. Beef, pork, lamb, veal, chicken, turkey and
brown egg layers are raised on pasture, without any antibiotics or hormones.
The beef and lamb are completely grass finished, while the other livestock
are supplemented with an organic grain mix. Wendy focuses on providing a
natural enviroment for the livestock to develop at their own pace and on the
foods that their bodies are built to utilize. Livestock are rotated over the
farm and neighboring grass land, so that they are always on fresh clean
pasture during the grazing season. During the winter, the sheep and beef are
fed hay that is harvested from local meadows.
Wendy has been farming all her life, but it wasn't until moving to the
central New York area in 1997 that she was able to purchase a farm big
enough to produce enough to have meat to sell. Meat is sold directly at the
farm, at the Regional Farmer's Market in Syracuse (Saturday, year-round),
and via www.meadowraisedmeats.com. The goat is raised at a grass farm in
Little Falls, NY.
Wendy farms by herself, hiring help for sheep shearing and chicken processing, and to assist with customers at the regional market. The poultry
are processed at the farm under a USDA exemption. The other livestock are
processed at Kelley Meats, a small family-owned and operated USDA inspected
processing plant in Taberg, NY.
Thanks for visiting Sweet Grass Farm. If you travel this direction, you can
make an appointment to visit the farm in reality. The farm is not set up as
a petting zoo or as a tourist "destination". Sweet Grass Farm is a very
busy, old-fashioned farm and you might very well get put to work when you
arrive!
